Planning a staff development day for your staff? Looking to add some fun training sessions that will support your library services to the young people in your community? Our mini workshops are a perfect addition to your next Professional Development Day. Only 90 minutes long, they are a wonderful way to provide more youth services training opportunities to staff.

 

 

Preschool

  

Painting with Young Children:

Looking to step up your weekly storytime? Painting with young children allows you to spend less time preparing for your weekly craft and more time helping children explore their world. Developmentally appropriate painting activities allow children to master many skills and processes that are essential for early learning. Children use painting to convey ideas, emotions, and experiences. Talking with young children about the painting process allows librarians, parents, and caregivers to connect with our littlest learners in new ways.

 

Join us and learn tips and techniques for no-fuss and (almost) no-mess painting with children ages 0-5.

 

Learning Outcomes:

 

          • Students will understand the early childhood developmental stages and how to design appropriate painting experiences for children ages 0 - 5.

          • Students will be able to integrate art activities into their regular storytime programming.

          • Students will be able to connect art activities to Early Learning Initiatives such as ALA’s Every Child Ready to Read program.

 

Sensory Play for Preschool Children:

Get some hands-on time creating sensory materials to share with young children at your library. Mix gooey concoctions like a mad scientist and have fun learning how to integrate sensory play activities into your normal storytime routine. Giving preschool children the opportunity to engage in sensory explorations helps build their cognitive development, linguistic knowledge, and fine motor skills while allowing them to learn through PLAY!

 

Learning Outcomes:

 

        • Students will learn how sensory play assists in developmental and learning goals.

        • Students will be able to integrate sensory play activities into their regular storytime programs.

        • Students will be able to connect sensory play activities to Early Learning Initiatives such as ALA’s Every Child Ready to Read program

School Age

 

 

Creating Books with School Age Kids:

Content creation with children gives them an appreciation for library materials, as well as allowing them to enhance their creative writing and artistic skills. Join us and learn book-making, creative writing, and journaling techniques appropriate for school age kids. Discover how to explore the history and traditions of books and printing with children, allowing them to develop a profound understanding of how their creation fits in with the larger world of books.

 

Learning Outcomes:

 

          • Students will learn techniques for creating and binding books appropriate for programming with school age children.

          • Students will learn techniques for exploring creative writing with school age children.

          • Students will be able to integrate discussion about the history of books and the development of printing into a creative program for school age children.

          • Students will learn how to connect a book-making program to Common Core and 21st Century Learning objectives.

 

Chemical Reactions--Science with School Age Kids:

Libraries need to be active partners in the educational community. Providing engaging and educational science programs for children allows us as Librarians to more effectively support our educational partners and the STEM initiative.  Learn easy and cheap ways to present an exciting science workshop for children at your library this Summer as part of your “Fizz, Boom, Read! programming.

 

Learning Outcomes:

 

          • Students will be able to present an interactive science program for school age kids at their library.

          • Students will learn how to encourage scientific enquiry behaviors in their program participants.

          • Students will understand how libraries can support the 2013 Next Generation Science Standards and 21st Century Skills initiatives.

 

Paper Airplane Club:

Learn the fundamentals of aerodynamics and origami while you play games and win prizes. Learn how to create your own paper airplane club for school age children and tweens from the materials in your supply closet. Paper airplanes are fun and engaging opportunities to gain hands-on engineering experience. While folding and sharing paper airplane techniques, children will be improving their spatial reasoning skills and reinforcing geometry lessons.

 

Learning Outcomes:

 

          • Students will be able to present an interactive engineering program for school age kids at their library.

          • Students will be able to discuss the 4 forces of flight with school age children and connect them to the real world engineering problem of paper airplanes.

          • Students will understand how libraries can support STEM learning initiatives through fun and creative programs.

Teens and Tweens

 

Science with Tweens, Teens and Doctor Who:

Support this summer’s teen reading theme “Spark a Reaction” and capitalize on the recent popularity of Doctor Who with a program perfect for the teens and tweens in your library. Join us and learn everything you need to know for a Doctor Who celebration at your library. You will leave with trivia, games, crafts, and science explorations for all of your teen fans.

 

Learning Outcomes:

          • Students will be able to create an inexpensive science program that is developmentally appropriate for teens and tweens.

          • Students will learn how to support teen developmental needs through a science program.

          • Students will understand how libraries can support STEM learning initiatives through fun and creative teen programming.

 

Programming for Tweens and Teens:

Join us and learn how to put together a successful teen or tween program at your library. Explore programming best practices, the components of a successful program, and how to manage teens and tweens. We will be discussing how libraries can meet the needs of their community through innovative programming, as well as reviewing YALSA’s Competencies for Youth Librarians and their Future of Teen Services document.

 

Learning Outcomes:

 

          • Students will be able to create inexpensive programs that are developmentally appropriate for teens and tweens.

          • Students will become familiar with YALSA’s Competencies for Youth Librarians.

          • Students will understand how libraries can support YALSA’s major programming initiatives, such as Teen Read Week, Banned Books Week, and Teen Tech Week.

 

Printmaking with Teens:

Libraries are in a unique position to help meet teen and tweens developmental needs, as outlined by the SEARCH Institute's 40 Developmental Assets. Library art programs allow teens an opportunity to connect with the wider world through studying art history while learning to express themselves in appropriate ways through art explorations. Explore creativity and art history with two printmaking techniques to use in teen art programs. These techniques are also adaptable for use with adults.

 

Learning Outcomes:

 

          • Students will be able to create inexpensive art programs developmentally appropriate for teens and tweens.

          • Students will learn how to support teen developmental needs through an art program.

          • Students will be able to integrate discussions of art history and cultural learning into teen programs programs.



Teen Readers’ Advisory:

Readers’ Advisory services are one of the benchmark services offered by library staff. It is important that libraries assert themselves as book and reading experts to their communities, and offer skilled Readers’ Advisory services to their customers. Teen Readers’ Advisory requires that staff be able to master basic Readers’ Advisory services with an additional level of comfort talking with teens about teen fiction and nonfiction titles. Familiarize yourself with best practices for Readers’ Advisory activities, practice gaining a quick understanding of new titles, and discuss how to make connections between other popular titles.

 

Learning Outcomes:

 

          • Students will learn basic readers advisory skills.

          • Students will learn about current trends in teen publishing.

          • Students will learn how to quickly evaluate new titles and connect them with other books in their collections.
